The legend behind the Boule people is that when the Bouale fled from Ashanti warriors they came to a river that they couldn't cross. Facing certain death, they sought the aid of a local sorcerer who told them to cast a child into the river to appease the river spirit. The Bouale leader handed over his own child to the sorcerer, who threw the child into the river. Imediately after this, an extraordinary number of hippos appeared on the surface of the river waters. They escaped their pursuers; and the hippos immediately receded back into the river. The Boule dolls pictured here have significant meaning as the Bouale treasure round faces.
